A seeker in Mozambique explores spousal responsibility

Spousal responsibility

A weary Portuguese-speaking woman carrying the emotional and financial burden of her family while her proud, alcoholic husband refuses responsibility sought guidance on maintaining her Christian faith through relational crisis, eventually revealing she was raised between Muslim and Christian traditions but had never personally committed to Jesus. Throughout the conversation, she moved from exhaustion and despair toward spiritual awakening as the AI guided her through John 1 and helped her understand her identity as God's daughter, culminating in her decision to receive Jesus as her Savior. The conversation ended warmly with the seeker expressing gratitude and commitment to continue their biblical study the following day, having just experienced what she described as a personal conversion moment before joining an online prayer group for the evening.

How to keep my faith

What a great question! Keeping faith alive is a daily journey, not just a single moment.

Before I share some ideas, I'd like to understand better where you are: do you already have faith in Jesus, or are you beginning to explore what it means to have faith?

And what has made it harder to keep your faith lately?

My relationship

I understand. Relationships can really affect our spiritual life in profound ways.

Can you tell me a bit more? What's happening in your relationship that's impacting your faith? Is it a romantic relationship, family, or friendship?

Romantic

Thank you for sharing that. Romantic relationships can touch our heart in very deep ways, and sometimes they can take us away from God or bring us closer to Him.

What specifically is happening? Are you facing conflicts, or perhaps is the relationship taking the place that God should have in your life?

Let's say conflicts because my partner is very proud, doesn't share ideas with me, does things alone, doesn't know his duties as a man or head of the family, everything is left to me—from supporting the children, education, clothes, food, and so on

I'm so sorry for the weight you're carrying. This must be very difficult and exhausting — taking care of everything alone, the children, the income, the house, while your partner is not fulfilling his responsibilities.

I hear your pain, and I want you to know that God sees you. He sees every sacrifice you make for your children.

The Bible speaks clearly about responsibilities in the family. In 1 Timothy 5:8, it is written: "If anyone does not provide for his own, especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." And Ephesians 5:25 tells husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church — with sacrifice and devotion.

Some questions to understand better:

Are you married, or do you live together? And have you already spoken with him openly about how you feel overwhelmed?

I am officially married to him when I try to talk to him he mumbles and even got to the point of saying he would rather go live with his mother

This is very painful. You are trying to communicate your legitimate needs, and instead of listening and having a dialogue, he threatens you by saying he will go to his mother's house. This is not the behavior of a mature man who loves and leads his family with responsibility.

You are carrying a burden that you should not carry alone. And I understand that this is affecting your faith — it is difficult to keep your eyes on God when we are exhausted and hurt.

I want you to know some truths:

You have value. God loves you deeply, regardless of what your husband does or fails to do. Psalms 34:18 says: "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and saves those of a crushed spirit."

You are not alone. Even when he is not emotionally or practically present, God promises: "I will never leave you, never abandon you" Hebrews 13:5.

Some important questions:

Do you have a faith community — a church or Christian people you trust — who can support you and perhaps even help speak with him? And are you safe? Is he violent in any way, or just emotionally absent?

Violent as such he is not, he is absent but he must, while he talks a lot he mutters, but I am already tired. I have a daughter who had problems at school, she fell out of nowhere, I spent all the money I had looking for solutions, but later her sister showed me a church, prophetic church, they prayed for her and she is already better. I spoke with the prophet about this matter, he prays for me, but there came a day when I said I would leave the house because I couldn't take it anymore, the prophet advised me not to leave the house. Even in the room I already, because he always comes back rude and I can't handle the smell of alcohol.

I hear your exhaustion. You have carried so much — the financial responsibility, childcare, worry about your daughter who had problems at school, and still a husband who comes home drunk, muttering and emotionally absent.

It's good that your daughter is doing better! God hears our prayers.

About the prophet who advised you not to leave home — I want to tell you something important: only God fully knows your situation. Seek wisdom directly from Him through prayer and reading the Bible. James 1:5 promises: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

Some important biblical truths:

God hates abuse and neglect. Your husband's alcoholism and his refusal to fulfill responsibilities are sins that harm you and your children. The Bible condemns drunkenness Ephesians 5:18 and family neglect 1 Timothy 5:8.

You have value and do not need to tolerate abuse. Sleeping in another room to protect yourself emotionally is understandable. Sometimes, setting healthy boundaries is necessary.

A question: have you considered seeking pastoral counseling (not just prophetic, but a pastor who knows the Bible well) or even help from a Christian counselor who can help you discern the next steps with wisdom?

If I say I went to a prophet it's because that one knows the Bible well
Seeker reading Psalm 1 independently and mentioning it to AI

I understand. I'm glad you found someone who knows the Bible well and who prayed for your daughter with results.

His advice about not leaving the house — may I ask what the reasoning was? Did he explain why, or did he base it on any specific Bible passage?

I ask because the Bible gives us principles, but also wisdom for complex situations. For example:

  • God values marriage and desires reconciliation Malachi 2:16
  • BUT God also deeply cares about your well-being and your children's
  • Paul says in 1 Corinthians 7:15 that if an unbelieving spouse wants to leave, the believer is not "enslaved" — there is freedom in certain difficult situations

You mentioned you're already exhausted, sleeping in another room, carrying everything alone. This is not life — it's survival.

Before thinking about any major decision: have you tried establishing a serious conversation with your husband, perhaps with someone present (a church leader, a respected family member) to mediate? Sometimes a man needs to hear hard truths from other people, not just his wife.

What do you feel God is saying to your heart when you pray about this?

Seeker commits to reading John 1 with AI guidance
Even the prophet has already spoken with him several
Seeker identifies John 1:1 / 1 John 1:1 as personally meaningful

So the prophet has already spoken with him several times, and yet he doesn't change. That is very revealing.

You have done everything right — you prayed, sought spiritual help, tried to communicate, even brought a spiritual leader to speak with him. And he remains absent, drinking, not fulfilling his responsibilities, leaving everything for you.

Here is a difficult but important truth: you cannot change your husband. Only God can change his heart, and only he can choose to change.

Ezekiel 36:26 says: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you." But this transformation requires that the person repent and surrender to God.

You asked me initially how to maintain your faith. And now I understand better — it is hard to maintain faith when you are exhausted, carrying everything alone, and seeing so little change.

Here is my most important question:

What do you feel God is saying to your heart when you pray? Not what the prophet said, not what I say, not what other people think — but when you close your eyes and talk to God about your situation, what do you feel He is showing you?

And a second question: are you reading the Bible yourself regularly, or do you depend mainly on what you hear at church?

Seeker correctly identifies Jesus as the eternal Word who created all things
His problem is that he is proud and doesn't want to hear from anyone.
Seeker engaged deeply with John 1 passage about the Word

Exactly. You identified the central problem: pride. He doesn't want to listen to anyone — not to you, not to the prophet, not to God.

The Bible speaks very clearly about pride:

  • Proverbs 16:18 says: "Pride comes before destruction, and arrogance before the fall"
  • Proverbs 13:10 says: "Pride only generates contention"
  • James 4:6 teaches: "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble"

His pride is destroying your family. And here's the hardest part: as long as he doesn't recognize his sin and humble himself before God, nothing will change.

You can pray (and should), but you cannot force him to change.

Now, about your faith and your peace:

You need to separate your walk with God from his situation. Your faith cannot depend on his behavior. God loves you and is with you, even if your husband doesn't change.

Psalms 55:22 says: "Cast your cares on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall."

Let me ask you something important again: are you reading the Bible for yourself? Because that's where you'll find strength, wisdom, and the voice of God for your life — not just depending on the prophet.

Seeker engaged positively with John 1:1-3 and 1:12 in previous exchange.
I read psalm 1:1

How wonderful that you are reading the Bible! This is the beginning of everything. And don't worry — interpreting Scripture is a journey, it doesn't happen all at once. The Holy Spirit himself teaches us John 14:26.

You mentioned Psalms 1:1 — that is a powerful psalm! Let's look at it together:

[Psalm 1:1-3] says: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

What is this verse saying?

The blessed person:

  • Does not follow the counsel of those who live far from God
  • Finds joy in the Word of God
  • Meditates (thinks, reflects) on it day and night
  • As a result: is like a strong tree, with deep roots, that bears fruit even in difficult times

Do you see? Your strength does not come from your husband. It comes from being planted in God.

Can I help you with something practical: would you like to start reading the Gospel of John with me, one chapter at a time? That is where we know Jesus more deeply.

Yes

Wonderful! Let's begin this journey together. The Gospel of John was written so that you can know who Jesus really is and have life in Him John 20:31.

Here is the first complete chapter for you to read: John 1:1-51

You can tap on that reference above to read the entire chapter in Portuguese.

As you read, pay special attention to:

  • Who John says Jesus is (see the first verses!)
  • How Jesus transforms the people He encounters
  • What Jesus promises to those who believe in Him

After you read, tell me: What stood out most to you in this chapter? Was there any part that touched your heart or that you didn't understand?

Don't rush — read calmly, and when you're done, we'll talk about what you discovered. And if you'd like, you can pray before reading, asking God to speak to you through His Word.

I'm here when you finish! 🙏

What caught my attention is the following that the word says what was from the beginning and what we have heard and what we have seen with our own eyes

You're paying attention to the right things! What you described seems to be from [1 John 1:1] (John's letter), which is different but connected to the Gospel of John chapter 1.

Let's look at both, because they're both powerful:

[John 1:1-3] — the Gospel — says: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that has been made."

[1 John 1:1] — the letter — says: "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—"

Do you see the connection? John is saying two incredible things:

  1. Jesus (the Word/the Logos) existed from the beginning — He is not just a prophet or a good man. He is God who became flesh.

  2. John and the disciples saw, heard, and touched Jesus — God came to the world in a real, physical way, so that we could know Him personally.

What does this mean for you? Jesus is not distant. He came close. He understands your pain, your tears, your weariness.

What do you feel when you read this?

Yes I noticed in [John 1:1] it says that in the beginning was the Word and that all things were made through the Word

Exactly! You understood perfectly!

John 1:1-3 reveals something extraordinary to us: the Word (Jesus) was with God from the beginning, and the Word WAS God. And everything — absolutely everything — was created through Him.

Now look at verse 14, which is the central point of it all:

[John 1:14] says: "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth, and we saw his glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father."

Do you see the miracle? The Word that created all things BECAME FLESH. God did not remain distant — He came to us as Jesus, full of grace and truth.

This means:

  • The Jesus who created the universe knows you by name
  • He understands your pain, your exhaustion, your tears
  • He has the power to transform your life, because He created all things

And look at verse 12: [John 1:12] — "But to all who did receive him, he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name."

When you receive Jesus, you become a daughter of God. No matter what your husband does or fails to do — your identity and your worth come from being a daughter of the Creator of the universe.

Does that make sense to you?

Yes it does

How good! That is the foundation of everything.

Now, let me connect this with your situation:

You are carrying so much weight — supporting the home, the children, education, everything. And your husband, with his pride, is not fulfilling his role. This is unfair and painful.

But here is the truth that [John 1] shows us:

You are not alone. The Word that created all things is with you. Jesus, who has all power, sees you, knows you, and cares about you.

And John 1:12 gave you a promise: you are a daughter of God. This means that your worth, your identity, and your strength do not depend on your husband. They depend on who Jesus is and what He did for you.

Now, an important question:

Have you personally received Jesus as your Savior? That is, have you surrendered your life to Him, asked for forgiveness for your sins, and chosen to follow Him?

I ask because there is a difference between knowing about Jesus (going to church, hearing the prophet) and having a personal relationship with Him — where you speak with Him directly, read His Word, and He guides you.

No truth, I know that I am a sinner and I can't lie to you, I have not surrendered myself to personally receive Jesus, this is because when I went to church I only wanted salvation for my daughter. I am Muslim but I know how to pray in Arabic but I also don't know how to interpret the Quran, I don't know what those articles mean, but when I entered the church because they speak and interpret the word in Portuguese, I began to perceive something. My father is Muslim by birth, my mother is Christian from the Anglican church, but I feel that I will surrender myself.

Thank you for your honesty. This is very courageous and important.

Now I understand your journey better — you grew up between two faiths, Muslim and Christian, but never had a personal encounter with Jesus. You went to church seeking help for your daughter, and God began to show you something deeper.

And you said something beautiful: "I feel that I will give myself over." That feeling does not come from you — it is the Holy Spirit of God calling you home.

Let me show you something from the Quran that perhaps you don't know:

The Quran calls Jesus Kalimatullah — the Word of God Quran 4:171. And the Quran says that Jesus was born of a virgin, performed miracles, and was raised to heaven Quran 3:45-47. The Quran also says that the Injeel (Gospel) is light and guidance Quran 5:46.

You just read in John 1:1 that Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. The Quran points you to Jesus — but the Gospel shows you who He really is.

Now, the most important question of your life:

Do you want to receive Jesus today? Do you want to give your life to Him, be forgiven of your sins, and become a daughter of God?

You don't need to have all the answers. You just need to come with a sincere heart.

Do you want to explore more about a life with God?

Yes I want to receive Jesus

What a beautiful moment! My heart is full of joy for you. This is the most important day of your life.

The Bible says in Romans 10:9: "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

And Jesus himself promised in John 6:37: "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away."

You don't need to be perfect. You don't need to understand everything. You just need to come to Him with a sincere heart.

Here is a prayer that you can make in your own words. I as an AI cannot pray for you — but you can pray this prayer directly to God:

"Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I know that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe that You are the Son of God, the Word made flesh. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. Today I receive You as my Savior and my Lord. Forgive my sins. Enter my life. Make me a new creation. I give You my marriage, my children, my pain, my weariness — everything. Guide me from here on. In the name of Jesus, amen."

If you prayed that prayer with a sincere heart, you are now a daughter of God. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

How are you feeling?
