How do I come back to faith after being hurt?

This page assumes the question is yours. Not that someone is pressuring you to come back. Not that you owe anyone an explanation for where you have been. Just that, on your own, you are noticing that the door is not as fully closed as you thought it might be.

If that is where you are, we want to take it slowly and carefully. The fastest way to undo this is to rush it.

A short, honest answer

Coming back, when it happens, almost never looks like going back. It usually looks like quietly noticing that you can pray again. Or that one verse landed today. Or that a stranger who turned out to be a Christian was unexpectedly kind, in a way that did not feel like recruiting. The Bible's pictures of return are mostly small, slow, and personal. The institutional version comes later, if it comes at all.

Talk it through

A few things that often help

These are not steps. There is no order.

Distinguish Jesus from the people who claimed to represent him. The single most useful piece of work for many people in this position is, slowly, to draw a line between the Jesus of the gospels and the system that hurt you. Reading one gospel — Mark is short, John is intimate — without the filter of any teacher you used to know is sometimes more effective than years of trying to argue yourself back. Some people are surprised, on a fresh read, by how often Jesus is on a different side than the people who used him.

Pray small. A lot of post-hurt return starts with one-sentence prayers that are mostly honest. "I do not know if you are there." "I am tired." "If you are real, you know where I am." Hosea 6 has the famous line: "Let us press on to acknowledge him; as surely as the sun rises, he will appear" (Hosea 6:3). Notice the tense — press on. Not "have it figured out." Press on, while still not having it figured out.

Do not start with church. This is contrary to most advice you will hear. The Bible's clearest picture of return — Luke 24:13–35, the road to Emmaus — is two disciples walking away from Jerusalem after Jesus' death, talking to a stranger who turns out to be Jesus. Jesus meets them on the road, away from the temple, away from the rest of the disciples. Recovery, in that story, is one-on-one and on the move. It is fine if yours starts that way too.

Let the timeline be honest. Real return to faith after real harm is usually measured in years, not weeks. The Christian tradition has language for this — restoration — and the language assumes time. Psalm 23 says God "restores my soul" (Psalm 23:3) in a sentence that, in the original, has the sense of slowly turning a lost or strayed thing back around. That is not an overnight verb.

Get help that is not us. If what you are carrying is more than ordinary church disappointment — sexual abuse, spiritual abuse, gaslighting from authority figures — please get a licensed trauma-informed therapist alongside any spiritual conversation. These are different kinds of work, and they need different professionals. You are not stronger by doing them at the same time alone.

What Christianity actually claims about return

1. Jesus does not require you to clean yourself up first. The famous line is John 6:37: "Whoever comes to me I will never cast out." Not "if you come correctly." Not "if your doubts are resolved." Not "if you understand the theology." Whoever. The grammar is intentional.

2. The way back is not a debrief. John 21:15–19 is the gospel scene most directly about return. Peter has denied Jesus three times — publicly, after promising he never would. After the resurrection, Jesus pulls him aside and asks him a question three times: "Do you love me?" That is the whole interview. Jesus does not require Peter to explain himself, defend himself, or apologize correctly. He repeats one question. The shape of return in the New Testament is not interrogation. It is invitation.

3. Some of the people most used by God had to come back from something. Peter denied Jesus. Paul persecuted the church. Thomas refused to believe his friends' resurrection story. Mark, for some reason, walked away from his first missionary journey and had to be brought back. The Bible is not embarrassed about any of this. The people who came back are written into the canon as the same people who came back. It did not disqualify them. In some cases, it shaped them into who they were after.

4. Community matters, but it does not have to be the community you left. Hebrews 10's encouragement to gather is real, but the gathering it has in mind is small ("two or three," Matthew 18:20), specific, and rooted in love. The form is allowed to be very different from what hurt you. A handful of friends. A small group that does not share your old church's politics. A spiritual director. A house church in a city you have moved to. Sometimes the only way to take Hebrews 10 seriously is to do it in a form that is unrecognizable from what you came out of.
